ok so for a newbie can someone explain how this remapping thing actually works ?  Specifically :
  • what (mechanically or otherwise) gets done to my car ?
  • what results can i expect
  • how long does it take
  • what is a ballpark figure of what its gonna cost
  • will it affect my insurance

ta

Mechnically; nothing.  Its all done via the ECU software

Depends on the engine.  Take a TDI 140 for example, you can expect to see another 30bhp and 50lbs ft torque; possibly more depending on the remap

Including a diagnostic check around about 90 minutes; depends if any faults are found.  Most tuners will advise of potential faults and either help to fix them for a fee or advise you to get them sorted and come back for a remap.  Any decent tuner will not remap a car if they think its unhealthy

Most remaps start at £200

Yes it will as you should tell them and it varies depending on your age etc like all insurance premiums

Rhyso smacks the stereo with a laptop untill the car behaves as it should

I don't use a laptop too, I use my hammer    Cheaper to replace

  • what (mechanically or otherwise) gets done to my car ?
- It adjust the settings of your ECU, mainly the fuel/air rations to achieve more power. Someone else (Doc) would be better suited to describe what it actually changes. Google isnt a bad shout either.
  • what results can i expect
- From a standard MK5 GTI expect to see 235-240bhp
  • how long does it take
- approximately 1 hour.
  • what is a ballpark figure of what its gonna cost
- This depends on who you go to (http://www.carbon-chiptuning.com/ / http://www.r-techpower.co.uk/index.php / http://www.revotechnik.com/ / http://www.tuningwerkes.com/ etc)
  • will it affect my insurance
- Technically you should be telling your insurance company, yes.

AlanD, Rhyso - cheers for the replies

So other than making the motor go like the clappers will remapping it provide any other side effects e.g. will my already p*ss poor MPG head further south ?

What sort of MPG do you get at the moment and what's your driving style?

If you drive it sensibly after the remap your MPG will improve slighty; however if you have an engine fault the remap will amplify the problem and make it a lot worse!

You need to ensure your engine is in tip top condition before getting it remapped

Then don't expect it to improve but do expect to get to places quicker
