Cut price mk5.5 GTI anyone?
« on: 10 June 2011, 16:12 »
Okay, firsly you'll have to take off your ''oh, I couldn't possibly park one of those down my road, my neighbours will think I'm poor'' or ''it looks like an MPV'' hats and have a quick look here:
http://www.seat.co.uk/generator/su/com/LeonFR09/site/start/main.html?ito=MAGADD686A4-5861-4E0F-8402-499CAE8CB8F0&itv=1110939

SEAT have done a half arsed job of updating their website today introducing the recently revealed Leon FR+ and along with it an offer on the 210 bhp TSI model - £20k for a fully loaded standard spec car including xenons, nav, bluetooth, sissy sensors, foldy mirrors, new LED tail lights, cruise control, 18'' non corroding wheels blah blah blah. Oh, and it shouldn't come with a waiting list that involves just about getting one off the production line before the Wolfsburg engineers strip all the mk6 tooling out and drag in the mk7 gear.

I know a bunch of you will come out with the usual negative comments but you can't say it isn't a bad deal £££ by VAG standards, especially if you can get to a broker which will discount one even further!

It's a bloody good deal for a car of that spec, I'm just not into Seat cars really as the ride is very hard.  But for some that would be too good an opportunity to miss.

When they facelifted the FRs in 2009 they softened the ride quite a bit. A good friend of mine works for a leasing company and gets loaned all sorts of cars all the time, he's a huge fan of the Leon FRs and often brings one round for me to have a look at; the early FRs had a back breaking ride but the newer ones are a lot better. Slightly harder than the GTI but not masses.
A few years ago he gave a few of us a lift up to GTI International in an early FR, I sat in the back and by the time we got there I thought my spine was going to implode. A few months ago he dropped me up to Bristol in a 2010 car, that car was perfectly comfy. It also had really nice alcantara seats in it which are an optional extra. They look and feel lovely but would get dirty really quickly.

It's not that it's a Seat, or that it isn't up to it dynamically (I'm sure it is). It's the design - I hate the way it looks and don't even mention the interior, especially the centre console. The A/C and radio look like they're from another car altogether... oh wait, they are.

They could at least have changed the shape of the console to match the controls. Even bargain basement Chinese market VW's have better attention to design detail.

If design aesthetic isn't your thing then it's a bargain. But for £20K I'd rather have a Skoda Octavia vRS.

I'm with you there Mac, and the Skoda looks like a lot of car for the money, and awful lot of car for the money in fact.

I've never been a huge fan of the mk2 Leon styling, it's grown on me over the years and looks good in the right colours and spec, but the interior really doesn't bother me. I've been in a few now and the earlier ones were a bit cheap and nasty looking but the post facelift ones aren't really that bad up close. The nav is just an RNS 310 (I think the latest ones have DAB and 7 digit postcodes) and the climate control is the Golf unit minus the chrome.
I like the funny texture on the top of the dash but I don't like the silver bits much and the door plastics are a bit cheap. You could argue that this gives it character.

I just thought I'd post it up really on the back of all the waiting list threads on here for Golfs.

At the end of the day a car is a compromise of so many things, looks, character, image and not least of all how much disposable income you have.

I reckon around about September time you'll be able to pick up a Diesel model pre reg'd on an 11 plate from a dealer for under £18k which would make a lot of sense as a mile muncher, the FR Diesels depreciate quite slowly too.
I can see why the pertol model is the one with the offer on though, it has always been a slow seller and suffers heavy depreciation, lacks the panache of the Cupra and not to mention VAG trying to conserve stocks of CR TDI engines!

Martin, what are you on about? He said nothing about buying one for himself.

Very nice. And for that money - great value.

If I wasn't so hooked into GTIs I'd have one.

Maybe when I'm older...
