Hesitation/Missfiring Edition 30 :(
« on: 08 June 2011, 21:55 »
I've noticed over the last few weeks that my beloved Edition 30 seems to be hesitating under load or under reasonably hard acceleration. Yet today it has been pretty bad! In 6th gear at 50-60 when i accelerate you can feel the car hesitating quite badly, and at low speeds when i put my foot down a bit the same thing happens.

It is a 2008 with a BYD engine and 38K on the clock. I read another post about coil pack problems and them being changed for free as there was a known problem but my engine code and coil packs were not those listed as suffering with a fault.

I'm pretty sure it's a coil pack and not the MAF, but how do i find out which coil pack it is? Will a diagnostic check pick it up despite there being no engine light on? If it is a coil pack how much do they cost?

I should also add that it seems to be a pain starting in the mornings. You'd expect it to fire up immediately but it takes a few seconds. Could it even be plugs?

Thanks

Mine is very iffy about starting in the morning aswell.

If you are going to replace a coil pack its good practise to replace all of them.

Have you not replaced yours yet? Are you going to do it? I'm buggered if I'm paying VW for a diagnostic when I know full well it only takes 5 mins to do and they practically wipe your wallet clean for the privilege!

Coilpacks affected are anything before revision F. IIRC.

Plugs will give hesitation too and would be my first port of call with this type of fault. Buy the Bosch OEM plugs as they are good enough and stable enough to support stock or modded cars.

My plugs have only done about 3k since the last service, would they be playing up already?

If they are OEM plugs then I seriously doubt there will be anything wrong unless you have noticed the hesitation since the plugs were fitted.

If they are Denso Iridium plugs then some people have gone through these pretty quickly (including myself)

Have you got access to VCDS/VAG-COM to do some logging?

The plugs were changed during the last service at VW and are NGK plugs, part number 06H905601A

I have to say soon after the service it didn't seem as responsive. As far as I'm aware my coil packs are not the ones that were recalled as a VW tech put a post on here stating which packs were not affected and mine had the part number for non affected packs. What's the part number for these revision F packs? Thanks

Do you know anyone with vcds? A forum user may be able to help you,What area do you live?

Could be a fuel pump issue?

Is the car remapped?

You could be suffering with poor fuel pressure.

it's not uncommon, oem fuel pumps are known to be an Issue..

Car is completely standard, it doesn't feel like fuel starvation, i had  similar thing in my old impreza, changed coils and plugs but never knew exactly what it was.

Send out a help thread in the general VW section for people local to you who could help with VAGCOM/VCDS as I mentioned earlier.

Looking at logs should help you pinpoint if the car is misfiring as well as looking at features like fuel pressure requested V's actual, timing etc.

As you are still stock I'd stick with the plugs and coilpacks for now (can't remember the part numbers for coilpacks off the top of my head though!)

All you need is one good sparkplug and replace each of the ones in turn off your car with the good one. If the hesitation stops you've sussed it.

With the coilpacks all you need to do is the same, if the sparkplugs check out okay.
