Rusty Bits
« on: 08 June 2011, 18:40 »
Well I've had me Mk.5 for a couple of weeks(its really belongs to the good lady!)while I think it's fantastic(car and GF) it has got
a few issues like the climatronic system which seems to be on a work-to-rule of more concern is the British Leyland levels of rust
in various places. The front passenger wing has bubbles starting to show the lower edges of the passenger door now I know its not
stone chipped as the paint surface isn't broken but the worst bit is in the rear boot roundel, the paint has just lifted right up.
Has any one else had these problems and were you able to get VW to fix under warrenty? The car is reflex silver 5 years old with 68K
and full service history.I've owned 3 Mk2s and a Jetta GT,several SEATs some over 13years old with 130K on them and were pretty good paint wise.

Rust on the boot?  That's an odd one alright  :undecided: Some people have had rust at the edge of the front arches but I haven't heard of any other places. Mine is 5 years old with 70k too and I haven't seen any rust.
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

Yup did google search plenty of people seam to get it on the front wings/arches,the bit on the boot is like bubbles just below the VW badge/handle if you lift the badge to open the boot you can see the paint has lifted in the recess,my Leon has a similar type of badge/handle but is all contained in a plastic housing. The car has had some previous warranty claim about last year(belonged to a mate) for the same problem in other areas the outcome of that was the driver side wing and both rear quarters got repainted under warranty so heres hoping!!Even if VW refuse I will get it sorted as want to keep it for a few years

The bodywork warranty was for 10yrs I thought but that was when I had my mk3 which interestly didn't rust at all!!! Unlike the rep as tug boats

I have heard about the front wings as well, so your not on your own. Even if it's a 5 yr warranty speak up now as they may well do it as it'll be clear it's been like that for a while. For the boot though I'd say it's too much screen wash which has a corrosive additive to stop it freezing at sub zero temps. Plenty of people don't dilute enough and it sits on and in recesses and rots the surface, although bubbles sound like inside out so maybe leaking wiper pipes at sometime?

Just below the boot handle in the ring is also known as a problem area.

Thanks for info was sure corrosion warranty was some where between 10 and 12 years.
Have had it in to the dealers coachworks (Verve).Guy took some photos seemed to be quite positive but said to phone in a few weeks as it takes VW ages to say yeh or nay.So fingers all crossed.

Don't get your hopes up - they're a nightmare to deal with under the anti-corrosion warranty - they'll do and say anything to avoid paying out.
