gearbox swap
« on: 07 June 2011, 19:21 »
My mate broke his gearbox 8v 2e engine so got a box from a mk2 1.8 gti 8v,he put a new clutch in too, problem is it wont engage gears and makes a whining grinding noise.
Any ideas what could be wrong?

He would need the 1.8 one if they are different, as said, not too sure if they do differ.
Will the gearbox go into gear with the engine off??
The whining sound doesnt sound good to be fair
The clutch was put in the right way wasnt it??
And centred up properly??

Did you match the new clutch to the engine or to the box, the splines on earlier boxes are smaller than the later boxes so this could be an issue

The gearbox will have a code on it, double check that code to the clutch you bought.
Does it make a constant whining noise whilst the engines on?
Could be a 100 an 1 things tbh matey, check that clutch first tho
