Maybe the older mk gti owners are not aware, but that steering wheel that we dont want to damage is worth more than their full cars, thats why we are a bit more careful and cautious. 
As an older Mk GTI owner as well as a Mk6 owner, I am full aware of how much certain parts of the Mk6 cost. It doesn't stop me having a go myself though.
With the Mk6, if I break something, a call to TPS and some money spent will see the part replaced in a couple of days. With the Mk2, if I break something, there will be alot of searching and probably quite a long wait until a suitable replacement part can be tracked down.
It's all relative really. With both cars, being carefull and methodical and most jobs will be doable with satisfying results.
