Also bonet covers do more damaged. They collect moisture and vibrate against the paint = paint damage.

Chop the springs. Good first choice. Whilst your at it, do the brake lines too.

My car had chopped springs, I suspect it may have passed its MOT with them too  . Really dangerous there was no preload whatsoever I took them apart without using my spring compressors. Ride was shocking.
