rear bushes

whats the first signs that rear bushes have had it..... just had the rear of the golf sliding out bmw style!on a roundabout....tyres are still leagal but road was wet only doing 20mph ?

Unstable rear when cornering and hitting a bump, or when going over a speedbump. Have a look at them, is the rubber perished and dry? If the bushes are the OEM ones by now they'll probably need changing anyway.
It may be a question of top mounts rather than bushes though, which will be less of a ball ache (trust me rear bushes are a massive pain to do) and cheaper.

hmmm top mounts are the same ones since had coilies...fronts now on 2nd set..think ill try them 1st!

I reckon you need new rear bushes or shocks if you say the tyres are good. Top mounts will bang around if they're buggered but i cant see how they'd make the rear end step out on cornering.

my rear end did this. slightly wet, 20mph round a corner and boom, looking out side windows.

It was my tyres, old and hard. Put new one tyres on and never had the rear come out again.

Also tyre pressure will do this, too high and it's tail happy. Check that first. try 30psi

rear tyres were @ 32...dropped to 30..... will jack up and see :)!praying not the bushes as ££££££ :(:(

does the rear end feel unstable and 'wallowy' on bumps and corners? if its really bad it'll bang

then you need new bushes, PITA job but much nicer on when poly bushes are in :)

great guide!! may bail on this and get garage to do this! depends on the bank of dad tho! poly bushes make a huge diff?

poly's are a lot easier to fit, last longer and generally tighten up the rear end a bit, noticeable if you're already running coilies or decent shocks & springs
