The sniffer test is a the way to go, if it fails then the gasket/head is leaking.

^^This, I would do it and see what the results are.

The heads coming off and theres nothing you can do to stop me, so nerrgh!

I've decided I'm going to take the head off.

Would it not be worth getting it tested 1st.
i would get it tested first personally a few years ago i had a stem seal problem and taking the head off was a pig of a job to do in the car
