Good post Ben. I think thats cheap lol plus I would buy low comp pistons.
I know what your saying guys about getting more hp for the money. But a mk1 gti will set you back a lot more than a mk3 gti and the mk3 is a better car. Sometimes you want something and the cost of things doesn't really matter.

Charging the vr would cost me 50% more than charging my gti.
If I wanted speed and fun I would buy a evo 4 for £3500 but I would rather spend that on my golf
Well said mate I'm totally with you on this one.

Although a mk3 with low mileage like yours is always going to be a rarity, mk3 gti's in general will never be collectable, a special one like yours might hold it's value or even increase slightly over time but as a stand alone car it is only really worth anything to you or another mk3gti fanatic so i think the idea of using it as a basis for creating something a bit special is a great one, and the fun is in the creating, not the creation.
Most people never recoup anywhere near the cost in time and money on a project car, they do it for the love of it and to create something a bit special.

I think mk3 Gtis will definitely be collectable, everyone said that back in the day about the fiesta rs turbos, and the r5 turbos when they were everywhere, If you've got a good mk3 keep it, it'll be rare when all the others have rusted away

I think that will only apply to Anni's, top notch Valvers plus Vr's.

I don't think the 8v will ever be collectable, it was bottom of the 'GTI' range anyway and not a well loved car when new, now that most of the good ones are in the hands of enthusiasts they can be made in to the cars they should have been at the start, but collectable?..i don't think so.
In fact i would say that the 8v makes a perfect 'project' car, plenty of cars to choose from, cheap to run and fix and you don't have to ruin something rare like an anni/vr and to a lesser extent a 16v.

I think your right guys but try finding a anni/16v/vr in same condition as mine, that hasn't been restored.
Also in 10 years you think petrol is going to be cheap?
I do agree with you but I think a top spec 8v gti will just be as desirable.

I'd like to think so, i have a very tidy 3dr 8v on a 'p' with only 125000 on the clock and history going back 13 years and 2 other family members, it looks great, drives great and i love it to bits but i really don't think it will ever be a 'classic'.

Neither do I, lets be honest only the mk1 & 2 will ever be worthy of the status 'classic' due to the fact they both made such an impact in automotive history. The mk1 for been the first real 'hothatch' to put into production and the mk2 for taking the next step in refining and improving what was already an innovative take on economic yet sporty motoring.
Where does the mk3 really step up from these two?

Most would say that the mk3 is where the golf gti went off the rails.
