Nah I prefer cv joint grease as a sort of 'keying' primer.. Whilst were on the topic, I'm after some 3 spoke alloys to fit under my rudeboy wheel arches if anyone knows?? Also some sort of badboy bonnet would be awesome, the more/bigger the vents the better really.. I'm even feeling a turbo whistler exhaust attachment and an electronic dump valve on the cards soon... What do you guys think??

Have you considered upping the ante with an electronic supercharger?

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.

I love research - see below regarding the differentials between the standard and G60 item..

Standard Wing Part No: 191 821 021E
Edition 1's with chassis number upto F >>1G-LW400-000* = Part No: 191 821 021E (ETKA note: adapt with workshop equipment)
G60, Edition 1 & Blue Edition chassis number from 1G-LW400-001>>* = Part No: 191 821 021D

Standard wheel housing liner Part No: 191 809 961G
G60, Edition 1 & Blue Edition wheel housing liner (Chassis number from 1G-LW400-001>>*) Part No: 191 809 961B

So by reading and looking at all of that, the early G60/Edition 1's must have just been fitted with modified standard wings, until such a point that dedicated tooling was made available to press out the G60 specific items.

PS. No side repeater holes on the dedicated G60 wing either as those special models wore a badge instead and I am assuming for standard wings that were modified must have the badge just covering the side repeater holes.

*Also please note the above parts numbers are for the left hand side, if you +1 on the very last digit of each part number, this will give the part numbers for right hand side.

There is an article In this months golf+ that says vw heritage/bigboys toys have recently done a deal with vw Wolfsburg which enables them access to the giant warehouse vw have FULL of genuine parts and it states that also in this warehouse is all of the original tooling which they also now have access to
This is surley evidence that vw is committed to keeping our mk1-mk2's etc alive and kicking

If its true, then that is fantastic news, cant comment on the Golf+ article, though I'll try to get a copy tomorrow
One of the reasons that I started this thread, was because VW are very aware of how important their older products are to people, and probably at the time of mk2 being dropped from production, weren't aware, like any of us, that the water cooled cars, would in the future, have such a wide following, not just in the UK, or Europe, but worldwide.

Thom
I hope this is true as VW promotes with the mk1 GTI and mk2 GTI yet does not help us out with support of parts. I would love to do a nut and bolt restore on the mk2 and another mk1 but the supply of genuine quality body panels is not great. I found it easier to source 50s british car stuff than 80/90s VW which is just mad.

So, back on track with the Restoration, new O/S wing was finally fitted some time ago, aligned very carefully with the bare door shell, that was weighted to duplicate the weight of the glass and inner gubbings etc, and then locked into place, using the O/E spire bolts, that had been cleaned of loose paint etc.
The wing itself dropped into place a treat, with very minimal tweaking. The panel did, as previously discussed, need some very minor filler work, to get it 100% straight, and ripple free. The body shell is now totally painted, and polished, doors will be re fitted next week, so you'll just have to wait for the pics
