Powder Coating
« on: 03 May 2011, 23:58 »
Anyone tried any of the DIY powder coating kits? Any good?

They seem pretty cheap, and having a look around the results look quite impressive, thinking of getting one for my Golf rebuild....

For the money professional powdercoating costs, just man-up and get it done.

Shotblast first, then powdercoat and your items will be good for another 20 years.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Yeah I have had some bits powdercoated in the past, my rocker cover still looks like new and it was coated over 10 years ago when I built the engine, just wondered if anyone had any experience of these kits...

Not read the detail on the kits, but the process involves curing in an oven- so you can only do smaller parts at home....

I just really like the convenience of being able to do it at home, part of my business is commercial catering equipment so a big oven isn't that much of a big deal, wouldn't really need anything bigger than a 17" Alloy, although you can cure with a heat gun or IR lamp apparrently...

A part could be sand blasted, powder coated and back on the car within about an hour. As I am stripping the car, I keep seeing more and more things that could be powder coated, it would definitely be easier to do it at home rather than send them off, and much quicker at that....

Has anyone used one of these kits?

I have one of these I got it from the kit car show in Exeter. It's not bad but as already said the price of powder coating is not that high. I think I have only used mine twice and you can't use your home oven as it gives of fumes that won't do you any good

I am planning on putting an oven in the garage, next to the sandblasting cabinet, get a bit of a production line going on.

What are the finished results like?

As you don't use it, want to sell me the kit?

We have something similar at uni, takes bloody ages to get a decent coat on with the particular type we have (imagine using a rattle can at a couple of metres away) and the consumables are bloody expensive but I couldnt comment on the one you have posted.
