16v cut out and won't start.

Guys

My 16v cut out this morning and won't restart.
I have checked the spark plugs and there was no spark so I changed the coil and dizzy cap, rotor is fine.
When I switch on the ignition I get a single spark as you would expect but there is no spark when cranking.
Also although I can hear the fuel pump running the cylinder i checked did not smell of fuel and the plugs were dry.

Does this sound like a sensor fault?? ATM my car is stuck a mile or two from my gf's house 

Anything common can check?

Fuse? Wire from the coil to the distributor ok?

Yea I had hold of that wire at one point and if deffo works *ouch*

Fuses all ok fuel pump relay fine.

Do mk3's have ignition modules?

I think it's actualy a single output module. Not 100% though. Either way I have a new OEM unit fitted £52 ouch...

This  happened on my mates vr ,one spark then nothing,turned out to be the crank sensor wire trapped in front engine mount ,broken wires

my 16v was cutting out recently and I checked all the wires and discovered that my crankshaft position harness was severly deteriorated i have a new one on the way I hope it fixes all the problems I've been having.

the crankshaft position sensor is located behind the front motor mount near the starter, the wiring harness is really long it goes toward the front of the engine, around the oil filter adapter plate, and up to the harness plate with all of the plugs on the front of the motor between the motor and trans its the black plug closest to the radiator on the bottom of the plate, if you have an ohm meter you can unplug it and test the wires for a short there, mine all had 0.4 ohms resistance between the 3 wires= obvious short... good luck, hope you find the problem..
