A car is worth whatever someone is willing to spend just like anything. If I could go back to when I was looking for a Golf and mine was availible in the state its in for £3500, Id snap it up. Its cost me a lotta coin to get it to where it is. Also, mileage is just a number. Id challenge it against any Mk 4 with half or more miles on it to drive as faultlessly. Plus cambelt, turbo, exhaust, hoses, waterpump, stat, coolant temp sensor, genuine g60 flywheel and sachs clutch (1500 miles ago), service every 3-4000, full extensive history, new suspension, wishbone bushes, ARB's and braces etc etc have all been done so really not too much that can fail.......... He says

When cars get to that mileage, plenty can fail. The main points being cylinder compression, head gasket and gear box.

Yeah bud, they can but the box showed no wear when doing the clutch, still tight in the gear positions, no noise etc, compression tests are fine which will really only fail on a negkected car and head gasket is ok and no biggie even if it did go and caught early.  All those problems can come up at ANY mileage on pretty much any car depending on how its treated et al

must of had x-ray vision to examine your gearbox when doing your clutch mate, the 02j ECW/EHA gearbox is known for failure plus my 98 105k mk4 must be worth at least £10k then because its got loads more mods than yours but can only seem to attact people who want to pay £4k
come on be realistic

careful with low mileage cars too, parts such as bushes etc can start to fail that higher mileage cars have already had replaced (talking from experience)

I agree that a car is worth what someone will pay... I had the gt tdi as in my sig.. Started as a standard 110 VE, converted to run a pd150 turbo, steinbaur chip, full miltek system, r32 kit, gen rs6 wheels, Koni fully adjustables, kamei grill etc etc. I wanted 5k for it on 120k and I got so many offers for 2/3k it was ridiculous so I withdrew it and didn't sell!
