Can't speak for the derv burners but from a GTi and hence mk5 perspective, here's the stuff my car has needed under warranty:

1. rattles from dashboard (many)
2. rattles from drivers door
3. moisture in the rear light cluster lense
4. rear door seals replaced
5. fuel pump replaced
6. rear bushes replaced
7. all 4 coils relaced (won't affect a TD)
8. white worm on alloys (again, just an 18" monza II GTi issue)
9. rear hight level 3rd brake light not working

All except 9 were sorted under the warranty so its worth asking to see what has been done under warranty. Obvious other stuff like FVWSh and when it was last serviced and is the next one a "big one".  Ask directky if it has been crashed, repaired and is HPI checked and clear. Ask if panels have been painted and if the wheel archs at the front have suffered from rust (mk5 issue).

Check condition of discs and pads and ask to see the PDI type check they do on used cars (mine was done a month before I bought the car and a small scratch that was on the car but not on th used PDI check they do meant I could argue that it was there before I picked it up).

Check the condition of the drivers seat side bolster and that all the electrics work and the speakers aren't tinny or distorting at a reasonabe volume.

Check for stone chips in the windscreen and cracks in front lights and scuffs on the rear bumper.
