horrible knock (tried searching cant find it ..)
« on: 15 March 2011, 07:48 »
hi guys,

i have a horrible nocking noise in my golf  it doesnt happen under acceleration or braking only happens on free run  or very light throttle  it happens in a straight line  is alot worse if you coast from speed and gets worse round left or right hand bends

i have replaced the passenger side  inner and outer cv joints and the wheel bearing  in the last week in an effort to cure the noise  and i also discovered my starter housing had snapped so the bolts into the front mount were no longer connected to the starter and the engine was sitting at the wrong angle  so one noise i wass getting is gone now that thats fixed   but this other noise i cant work out

my only guess at the moment is the gearbox is breaking  due to the sh!tty rivets wearing and being about to snap .. i did have one gearbox let go completely at the traffic light grand prix and had to pick bits of casing and planet gear out of the road

so does it sound like its replacement gearbox time ?   or is it something else ?

Errr if your gear box works and goes into gear correctly I should imagine it could be a gear box or engine mount? You need jack up the points to see if there is any play!
usual knocking sounds do come from the stut suspension side as they are moving about another place to check is the steering side aswell?

it does work and go into gear correctly but  it did last time before it shat itself and i was left picking up bits of casing and gear from the road to me it seems a little too constant to be an engine or gearbox mount as in some positions there would be load on the mount enough to "take up the slack"  as it were

also the noise very much sounds rotational  if you know what i mean

Like a werring sound then it could be a wheel bearing on the back?
If its hard to locate, I don't usually recomend this. But I did jack the rear of the car up on some ramps then jacked up the front and started the car up dangerous as hell, but managed to locate the issue with a mate reving the car whilst checking for the noise. All it was in the end was a dust shield catching in the inner disc.
If you do this make sure there is nothing in front like a house!

Alternative need to get a massive pry bar and start putting load on joints and moving parts!

Just becuase the last gear box died, don't let that lead you in thinking it might be the same issue.
rule out the simple things first before you go down that route again!

Other ideas could be a dodgy loose/bent drive shaft, or even a loose pulley near the crank!
Does it do it when clutch is engaged when underload?

it does it when the clutch is engaged on light throttle or a little bit of over run   dissapears under heavy acceleration or braking  and happens in a straight line but is worse while cornering   it is at its absolute worst when warm at about 35-40 goung round a LARGE roundabout

Ok sounds like the top donut mounts on the strut?
Did you do the wheel bearings yourself? If so they could be damaged depending if you used a hammer method
I would strip the whole hub again and re check everything mate!
Check ball joints for play aswell!

well ... i am obviously a retard lol   so when i stripped it apart the other day i threw all the bolts and stuff into my big box of vw bolts and putting it back together i grabbed 4 of the rustiest wheelnuts ive seen in a while (didnt notice at the time as it was pretty dark and i was tired lol )   and while they had felt tight when i was doing them up they were not done up all the way ..

loose wheelnuts lol    it dawned on me as a possibility on the way to see my mechanic as i remembered a similar noise in my e30 with shiny shiny bbs splits on it after leaving a show .. clearly someone had tried to half inch them as all the nuts on all the wheels were loose

but this time it was me being retarded

Hey we have all been there and just glad its now sorted! Lesson learned, it could have been dangerous if a wheel came off at speed  :lipsrsealed:

I've always torqued them up after 30 miles of driving, regardless if I thought they had been done up well

All it was in the end was a dust shield catching in the inner disc.

How did you fix it?
My N/S dust shield is loose, it's got a shiny groove from where it's been making contact with the disc!
