Just a bit of advice needed on where to go next with the Golf.

The crank bearings are shot and i am considering whether to get the current 1.8 8v lump repaired or put a different lump in?

As the engine will be coming out and with the cost of the repairs, i might as well think about a change!

What do you all think on this? Do i convert or repair? If i convert, what do you recommend?

My car is J Reg 1.8 8v, its has the usual upgrades, cam, chipped, exhaust system.

I'm looking at anything upto £1500, possibly £2000 if its going to be worth it?

A few people have recommended the 2.0 8v, which looks pretty interesting as there is less work than other conversions?!

I'm pretty happy with the power but if i can get more poke whilst the engine is out it will be easier in the long run!

Thanks for the welcome, my first post! Bit of a biggy!!

just change the bottom end for 2.0 8v, can get whole 2.0 engine for less than £50.

if its a GTI then its direct swap, days work :)

That's sounding pretty interesting! Good option I think, I love the 8v!

Is there anything else you would recommend to be done while the lump is out for more gains?

Not after super amount of hp, but again, the work might has well be done while it's out!

Cheers

big valve head might be an idea, apparently these help when you go with a 2.0 bottom end. clubgti prob worth a trawl thru to see what people have found when doign this mod on their cars.  the man in the shed head group buy might be worth a look see fi its still on
