Rev counter not working
« on: 12 March 2005, 15:49 »
Help!
Just fitted some GTi clocks to my '89 1.6 Driver. I replaced the GTi 140 mph speedo with my 120mph one and removed the blanking cover from the back so that I could plug in the plug that came with the foil on the back of the GTi clocks. Everything else seems to work fine, (MFA displays clock, havent fitted stalk yet) but the rev counter doesnt do anything. Only movement is when I switch off the ignition, then I get a small blip and thats it. Checked the coil conection (Red and black wire?), seems fine. Removed a fuse (3 one in on the left it seems, at least the MFA switched off) to no avail. Anyone have any suggestions? Dash currently in bits

Rev counter comes off the coil its a green/blue wire.  Check its plugged into the coil and the dash plugs.  Can you get hold of a spare set for testing?  It should work no problems, all the wiring for the rev counter is definitely there.

Cheers, checked the coil and the wires I could see where:- 2 x black (to the front), 1 x green (back), 1 x red and black (back). There is a spare connection that has no wire running to it at the front of the coil...
On the Clocks side I can see a red and black wire on the right hand (white) plug but no wire to match the green wire from the coil.
When you say green/blue wire do you mean striped? Can't get a spare set really.
This is driving me mad!

Yeah according to a diagram I have here its green/blue striped.  Its for a US spec model so the colour may be different. It should go to Pin4 on the long side of the white plug.

The connection on the front of the coil is supposed to be disconnected btw, so no worries there :)

Cheers again! Checked the connection and it is a red/black striped wire on UK models it appears. Checked for a voltage across it and there is one so I guess it must be the rev counter. Funny cos from what I have read it seems that the rev counter and MFA usually go together. Mine displays the clock, cant check other funtions yet. Dammit, gonna have to get a new set. Very annoyed!

Hmmmm, never thought about that! Maybe I could fool them into thinking I have two engines as well! (2 hands on the clock)
Seriously tho, anyone have any ideas before I shell out?

one thing, make sure ALL the nuts and washers are there, they actually supply electrical connections to the rev counter, fuel gauge etc.  Also check the earth lead from the rocker cover to under the coil.  While you're there swap the voltage regulator over from your old clocks (the black thing with 3 prongs screwed onto a big metal plate at the top right)

The rev counter might just be dead though :(

Ok, got in car after refitting my dash and the rev counter appeared to work. Yipee I thought. A mile down the road and it died. MFA still displays clock but no rev counter.?
