Mk3 VR6 Issues

Hello,

I bought a mk3 vr6 as a doner car for my mk2 conversion a while back.

I checked over the car and there appeared to be no issues and drove it home fine. Since then, I have noticed some blue smoke from the car on start up and also a quantity of steam. This clears after around twenty seconds and the car runs fine but does smell like it is burning a bit of oil. I have checked the fuel filler cap and on the odd occasion there has been a very small amount of Mayo after a short run but there is no evidence on the dip stick.

Another problem I have is I am losing coolant. When I say I am losing coolant I mean I lose 2 litres after a drive! There is a definate leak coming from the back of the engine on the right as you look from the front.

I'm hoping the head gasket isn't going as the engine feels really strong!

Any ideas re where the leak may be coming from etc?

My old VR use to get a very small amount of mayo under the oil cap,sometimes it can be because you do very short jorneys or if its left standing for some time or as you said could be the start of head gasket failure.If you have a water leak would it first be best to prove and fix that and see how you get on,it might be ok then.

Before the crazy leak started the car was not losing any coolant at all.

If it is the head gasket is it worth saving the engine or just trying to find a new one?

Head gasket is not easy on the VR but should or will be worth saving.

If it was losing that much water due to a failed headgasket then i think you would notice it when driving it!

Ha ha ha, I was thinking that.

Im hoping the blue smoke is valve seals and I can sort it out in due course.

It's difficult to see tbh as it appears to be dropping at the back of the engine and then dispersing. Someone said to me it could be a leak around the manifold but I'm not sure.

It could be your head gasket weaping, not a lot of coolant hoses on the back of the engine.
