right well thats a start!, being a 1.4 is gotta be a petrol, now wether its an 8v or a 16v im not sure but it will be fuel injected either way, right, is the engine actually turning over?? these cars suffer from starter motor problems, 1st indicated by a high pitched noise as youve finished using the starter motor to fire up the engine, from that stage on they get worse and in some cases fail all together, there for the gear will not contact the flywheel and there fore not start the engine, this can be tried many times and will often start randomly but some times can take ages.

if the engine is 'turning over' then we have to look for different causes, dose the car start fine when its warm/be run??? if so this would point me to the direction of the temperature sender which tells the ecu how hot/cold the engine is and adjusts the fueling to suit (more fuel needed when engine cold) this could be a cause for poor starting when cold.

there could be other reasons also, but seen as the problem seems to be only when its cold it narrows things down abit.

if theres some one locally to you that has a laptop with 'vagcom' softeware you can plug this in and find any ecu fualt codes that are showing, that may be another way to see why you have this prob...

it sounds like the ignition switch when u try to turn it over to start wiggle the key a little and see if that helps it turn over the contacts are wearing inside the switch

Right he took it in to be serviced at the same time as having the starting problem checked. The garage had the same problem this morning starting it but once they started it they began the service on it. This service envolved oil changes new spark plugs etc. After the service was done the car started first time and it has done tonite when he collected it. So im lost now to think what it is the garage reckons it was the old spark plugs that were playin up but how can spark plugs really play up on a car thats done only 7000miles and is 12months does anyone think it is this or may have been something else and the garage is talking crap. Cheers
