honestly mate from experience I've had so many customers come in spark plug faults. Replaced whatever make of plugs in there with oem plugs and they've never been back since.

My cousin had a remap on his S3. Now 3 weeks prior to the mapping he fitted some high performance plugs(forgotten the brand). 2 weeks after the remap he developed the misfire and i diagnosed it down to the plugs. Replaced them with some oem items and been fine since.  This was nearly a year ago.

From my point of view when it comes to the mk4 and onward model golfs only oem plugs can really work in the engines. No doubt other people here will disagree but this is my own say on it.

First posted iridium electrode spark plugs re: 1.8T 8yrs ago eu & us forums.
time to update: denso & ngk iridium plugs SAME production line / physical factory in japan - no change

Originally denso IK20 basic street heat range - now update to denso IK22 basic street AND mild tuned 1.8T - IK20 runs slightly hot in typical high summer temps worldwide

this means detonation will be detected and timing retarded (pulled) randomly street driving - solution use slightly colder denso IK22 as street plug EXCEPT during genuine low temp winter conditions - for this use denso IK20 only winter conditions, than change to IK22

re: 1.8T spark plug gap - ONLY gap to 0.028 inch or 0.7mm DO NOT increase gap as excessive discharge arc current will cause coilpaks to over heat and fail - I have posted this data for 9yrs and remains valid AND included hitachi coilpaks fitted a3q/s3/s4 varients and mk4 1.8T

denso IK22 is nominally (close but not quite) factory gapped 0.0288
and can be lightly tapped to close down to 0.0275/0.028

denso IK20 factory gapped to 0.038 and MUST be adjusted to 0.028

denso IK24 only recommended for fully developed engine / BT and is not suitable for prolonged slow crawling urban traffic conditions

while many prefer conventional spark plugs, iridium electrode plugs give consistant discharge arc joule levels without fouling during street driving / immediate engine response

if you experience detonation problems due to unresolved f/a issues USE conventional spark plugs as centre electrode + earth strap more robust and resistant to mechanical shock - and sort out your ecu mapping or add water injection

there remains on-going perception that nippon denso heat ranges are slightly different from ngk heat ranges re: iridium electrode plugs - in reality same with proviso that you have access to fully product line of each brand, this varies from country/region

So for my mk4 golf 1.8t 1999/AGU my spark plug gap will be 0.7mm??   I'm currently running a 1.2mm gap :/ and experiencing some tempermental lagg. Will this be my problem.
Please confirm spark plug gap for my golf :')

THANKS!!
