'94 MK3 16v Gti rough running when cold. ECU Temp Sensor?

My golf runs rough when cold and is fine when warm and from what i have read it could be the ECU Temperature sensor.

I have the new sensor in my hand but cannot find it on the engine anywhere to replace it. Can anyone tell me where it is and if i am going in the right direction?

By the way the temperature gauge seems to be working fine and the digital temp display on the right stalk only states a temp when 50 degree celcius and above is this normal?

I have found a small sensor on the right hand side of the engine but it is different to the new one i have.

thats the wrong sensor, looks like a mk2 or mk3 8v sensor to me. go to vw for this one:
026 906 161 - temp sensor, white, m10x1 - 32.24+VAT

Yeah it was the wrong one.

I am going to clean the idle valve up by soaking it in petrol for a couple of hours and see if that makes a difference.

If it doesn't then I will try unplugging the airflow meter and see if it performs better. Can't afford a new airflow meter mind and I am guessing second hand ones will be a bit hit or miss so we will have to see

16v has no airflow meter. Just intake air temperature sensor.

I suggest you clean ISV as you're doing already, clean the throttle body, and replace the coolant temp sensor with the one rubjonny posted, it's the safe bet (VW).
