i bought a 93 gti 8v and it seems the previous owner lowered it by cutting the springs      what springs will fit to make it a more comfortable ride at the moment you can feel every bit of grit on the road

I would go for a set of standard springs or even better a set of 40mm lowering springs to sit on the standard shockers. Anything lower than 40mm and you will need to think about upgrading the shockers as well.

is it much of a job to change the springs

Not too bad Mate but depends if you've ever done it before. It's simply undo the top nut in the top mount under the bonnet using a spark plug spanner and a 7mm allen key. Then jack up the car and remove the wheel. Undo and remove the two 17mm bolts that hold the bottom of the shocker to the hub. Then finish taking off the top nut. Ensure the pipes from the brakes are disconnected. Then the shocker will cme away from the car. Then use spring compressors on the spring and remove the second nut from the top. Carefully then remove and uncompress the spring and replace with your new spring. Put back together and it's always best to replace the top mounts while the car is in pieces. Pretty easy Mate  :wink:

thanks for your help    are there any breakers in your area with golfs in    as here in hereford we only have 2 breakers

What do yu want from a breakers ??  E.Bay or a forum is the best place to buy springs from. Then when they arrive you just fit them once. A breakers will charge you a fair bit for them whereas if you buy some springs and fit them to your car it will work out cheaper.

Better to fit a set of s/h standard springs on new gas shocks or if you still want it lowered then a new set of springs.
