mk 2 timing belt
« on: 30 January 2011, 19:34 »
Hi. I need some help! I'm in the process of replacing the head gasket on my 8v digi gti. I took the cam belt off but i didn't check the timing marks.  The head is off now.  When i put it back together can i just follow the timing guide http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=100103.0 cos it says to line it all up b4 you take the belt off or have i stuffed it all up? The cam and sprocket are still on the head and the crank pulley is still on and they are roughly where they were when i took the belt off but i think the cam turned a bit when i took the belt off!  Thanks for any help as i have no clue and i don't wanna puy it all together only to blow it up.  Oh does anyone know if the timing proceedure is the same for the 8v mk2 and 3 as i have found a guide with pics i think i understand a bit better than my haines manual.

cheers

turn the head and block to TDC, then you can refit the head no bother. main thing is your dizzy is gonna be out now, so remove the dizzy cap and make sure the rotor arm is lined up to the notch mark once the belt is back on. then move the leads so #1 is where the rotor arm is pointing and then follow the relavant ignition timing guide for the engine
