sorry the 2nd part of my last reply was aimed more at tshirt2k :)

the light on the switch should only come on when the lights are switched on, that doesn't prove the pads are getting power. if the light comes on with the ignition then you have got the 2 wires the wrong way round.

yeah, it comes on with the headlight switch.  I couldn't hear any clicking from the seat relays...

Why do I have to be so baffled by car electrics...

sounds like you have missed an earth or a live, look over the loom carefully and make sure you dont have any missing wires.

if it all looks good try moving the black wire into one of the other jumper blocks? maybe the one you picked has blown the fuse or something. on one of mine i was chasing a problem for a while then eventually i looked inside the jumper block and noticed all the metal contacts were missing, which explained everything

Ok, thanks a lot for your help, I'll give it a crack and see what happens.  I'll replace the relays in the seats too.

fingers crossed.

ok, so the switch is lighting up and there definately is a clicking coming from underneath the seat somewhere when you turn it on, but the seats just don't seem to be warming up.

any ideas?

You need to check if there is voltage at the element plug. If there is, You may have a dodgy element.

and all of a sudden I feel out of my depth....

Also, I just started the car to leave it running for a minute and it dies.  Now If I turn the ignition to the first two clicks it's fine, lights and such come on, then if I try to start the car there's nothing, all the light dim and there is a repetitive clicking, but nothing, the car isn't even turning over.

May be a coincidence. Sound like your starter has packed up too.
