Brake change, what do i need?
« on: 29 January 2011, 17:14 »
Im shortly going to be changing the brakes (both discs and pads) all four corners, as they are getting low.  Ive never done it before, so am unsure which bits i will need (not tools) just the brake parts.  Obviously im aware ill need 4 discs and 4 sets of pads, but do i need anything extra?

I have a mk5 tdi golf (140) if thats important.

Thanks in advance,

Jonny

On the rears there is a torx nut to remove, I borrowed this but would be good if you have a selection available.  It was also bloody tight to get off on mine, other stuff would be a copper grease for when you install the pads and for just lubricating surfaces once they have been cleaned.  To shift the pistons on the rear calipers you need to apply pressure whilst rotating the piston it will retract this way as it is on a ratchet.  Your best bet would be to look in the mk5 maintenance section.  Fronts took me no time at all but the rears were a bit more of a pain.

Old post, but ive still not changed the brakes  :undecided:

Ive not got the time, but ive got a guy who can do the work for me, i just need to know which parts i need to buy?  As i can get a good discount on parts from a local supplier.

Which parts other than brake discs and pads do i need?

Thanks,

Jonny

Over on mk5golfgti.co.uk  . lots off derv drivers take the opo to upgrade there Complete brake kit  buying the slightly better GTI 312mm fronts and 288mm rears.,It seams the perfect time to upgrade and there are lots around as most GTI ED30 drivers up grade there set up to 345mm front and 310mm rears ..

OH and just buy the chance i have a rear set up complete and available for £100 , set off fronts go for around £100/150 a very worthwhile upgrade and no better time if you are all ready spending on your brakes
