Running problem
« on: 26 January 2011, 14:36 »
Heya i have been on here a few months now, not posted much as i aint had any internet lol.

Got a few problems with my  K reg 1.8 mk3 golf cl (75bhp)

When im on the motorway in 5th it seems to act like when a carb is black spotting, also around town it does it but not as much.
I have changed the leads n plugs, the dizzy cap n rotor arm, cleaned up the distributor but its still doing it.
While im driving it seems to have a rattle on the engine, the only way i can describe it is it sounds like an old air cooled beetle.

I dont know if these two things are connected in anyway but if anyone has any idea what both problems could be please help lol

Also again i dont know if its connected but i struggle to get 300 miles to a full tank of petrol, and thats driving it very sensible.

You don't have a carb fitted but single point injection, start by getting it scanned for faults.

Could be the temp sensor playing up.

i did change the thermostat before christmas as i had no warm air in the car, i have now got the warmth back but my temp gauge never goes above the quarter mark, is that right? lol

oh and it takes a long time for the heater to warm up inside the car.

Temp gauge should be bang on in the middle.

Looks like your stat is jammed open, meaning water is always circulating around the radiator hence why it takes ages to warm and and it's only stuck on around 70C (because the car is moving the air cools the coolant on a constant basis).

They can fail from brand new, especially if it's a non VW part.

It's not that hard to change, pas pump off and the stat housing is just there. 30 minutes from start to finish MAX.
