To the OP and everyone:
Just this minute heard my friend's GTI Mk6 was stolen in similar circumstances in Dulwich, London. Felt really sick hearing this. The family is in shock.
Please, please review the security of your homes, especially the front door.
I hope OP, all will work out for you.
It has 'hit home' today with this awful news.

Whilst at the dealership today to have my Philips bulbs fitted and the high and dipped beams aligned, a young German customer who lives in Barnes, London had his house broken into, his car keys (Mk6 Golf) and house keys stolen at knife point. They even tried to saw-off the steering wheel. It's costing him over £1000 for new house keys and car keys/locks.

And another one had the keys of his Polo stolen from his table in a restaurant yesterday. VW dealership had to re-code the spare set.

All quite shocking.

Guys quick update. Insurance company offered replacement GTI but i've decided to turn them down and take the money. I just won't be able to sleep at night with one on the drive. Unfortunately this means GAP won't pay out. esure have also cancelled my insurance which means its going to be very difficult to get insurance on anything from now on. Looking at a Golf GT at the moment but going to look at alternatives this week - all Diesel powered

My sister and her husband was rudely woken up 3 weeks ago after thieves smashed there patio doors and stole there house keys and car keys to there mk5 golf gt tdi and there evo 8 cost them 1400 to replace the house locks and the golf locks and have since installed a new alarm system which texts you if your out and a new camera system!

Which was a good buy as they returned again on wednesday just gone to get the cars however they couldn't get the golf as the locks are now changed so they then attempted to break into the garage and steal the evo but then the house alarm went off via the sensor in the garage so for now they have failed twice to take either cars but it makes you boil knowing there going to keep trying till they have got them.

they also stole £100 cash a camera and a usb memory stick and some old trainers dont know why they took a usb stick her handbag and her husbands wallet, which was later recovered down the road! Definately after the cars particularly the evo as the police have said theres a gang after japanese cars in our local area! There have been 7 taken around the gloucestershire area in the last week alone subaru's evo's and integra type r's and also seat leon cupra r's are also a favourite.

anyway heres a link to the footage off my sisters new camera system which is now been handed to all police stations in the south west of england so hopefully they might get caught now!

Map thats really bad what has happened to you. If you want something Diesel why not a GTD, almost identical to the GTI but less likely to be stolen therefore you get the best of both worlds.

Just for your info, there are a unbelievable amount of cases where people are breaking into houses, taking car keys and then taking the cars.  Literally hundreds every day up and down the country, so much so that the Police have a nationwide operation (op millennium) in place.

The burglars tend to only go as far as they can see from windows, they won't go upstairs (generally) and will only go into a house as far as they can see from outside as they don't want to bump into home owners.

The simple things to do are not to leave keys on display, especially not all hung up together or in a kitchen counter.  Mine come to my bedroom with me.

As far as security goes a good alarm is a brilliant choice, but is expensive.  Make sure you double lock all doors and don't leave keys in the doors.

A trend that has been occurring recently is putting a piece of bent pipe through the letterbox of PVC doors, getting the pipe over the handle and opening the door that way.

Most burglars are opportunists and they will try every door on a street, you'll find that the one that gets broken into is the one that has left their keys out, or done something out of a momentary lapse of memory.

Again, this is a generalisation, aimed at these particular type of Burglaries.

A big dog is also a great deterrent. If possible, add a ground anchor or bar to the end of the driveway, so that even if they get the car keys they can't get the car off the driveway.  Camera's (both covert and overt) can help.  There are rumours that you can't have camera's, but it's crap.  As long as it's not directed in a window or on another persons house you're fine.  A good security system fitter will tell you this too.

As someone has previously mentioned a steering lock is always a good call too.
