how to wind the mileage back on a mk2
« on: 19 January 2011, 20:17 »
Now I know this is a sensitive subject....

But I have the clocks from my donor car in mine, and the mileage is way off. I want the mileage to add up at the next MOT, as the last one shows about 103k, but my clocks show 217k, how dodgy is that gonna look in the cars history? I'd rather not try and find another set of clocks with specific mileage as that could take forever, so is there a way I can wind back the mileage on my current clocks?

Yep it can be done easy.

But I am not sure which is the best way, RJ should know.

Apparently I can wind it back on the speedo cable from the gearbox end, but isn't there a mechanism somewhere that stops it winding back when you reverse?

Don't think it will work that way.

Not being funny, but could that reply be sent in a PM Jon? Don't want people coming on here and finding out how to clock a car that easily.

I realise clocking is not the intention.

well to be fair, anyone who believes the milage in a mk2 is asking for trouble, how many are running around on the original clocks? but i can edit and send via pm if you like :)

mk2's are quite easy to clock anyway   but some of the more recent stuff with digital speedos  is scary easy.
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
