So the MK2 is poorly, and needs a replacement gearbox. I can't afford to buy new (at all) so I'm looking at second hand. Found a 4 speed box from a MK3 Golf,

Mines a 1991 MK2 1.3 and this box is out of a MK3 1.4 (1992 model apparently :lipsrsealed:)

As far as I can see from pics of the MK3's 1.4 engine it's the same (different air filters), but does anyone know if it'll fit or how I'd find out?

I think they would be the same as both are Polo engines I believe.

I know the MK2 Golf is the same engine as the Polo, because I've had polo parts before.
They're asking for the code for the gearbox, I know where to find the engine code (which is something like 2G or 2H), but no idea about gearbox code!!
Are they in the format "020"?

Yep, should be stamped on the bottom of the bellhousing.

Edited to save forum space ;)
Anyone have the code for the gear box?? I can't get to the  fooking thing and from what I can see it's all mucky anyway. Blocked in the garage with two cars infront of it and not enough room down either side to get to the thing!

020 is the type code for big block rod shift box. 084 is the type code for 4 speed smallblock gearbox, 085 is for the 5 speed. this isnt the same as the box code, which tells you what gear set is inside it.  you can find the box code on the sticker in the boot, or on the inside cover of the service manual.  if you get a 5 speed box you also need the bracket on the box plus the 2 parts of the gear linkage in the engien bay, the bit on the shift rod plus the bit on the box itself. cheap from vw if needed.  the bracket from a mk3 golf will also work in a mk2 :)

pretty much any polo or mk3 1.0-1.4 box will work fine, apart from the more exotic engines in polo may have a different box i.e. diesels and the 16v?

box codes for 1.3 MK2:
AKW - 4 speed
8N - 5 speed

8P is a good box to get, found on the MK3 Polo. if you tell us the code on the box they are offering i can look up what car its from

Thanks for that post mate, that's really helpful. He's supposed to be looking at the box today so I'll let you know as soon as I do, probably tonight.

On the sticker in the boot the engine code is 2G, but it says engine/trans code? Assuming from the codes above thats nothing to do with it. I guessed from the Haynes manual 084 came into it somewhere, but the net suggested 020 which is obviously wrong.

Does 2G refer to anything re: transmission, and what does 020, 084 etc refer to? Are these seperate from box codes and what do they look like? Millions of numbers and letters on that boot sticker!

Thanks again mate, how do you know all this?!?! Tried looking on the net but all that did was make it even worse, so many websites with inaccurate info.

2G is just the engien code chap, the box code as far as i can see is one of the 2 will be AKW if its a 4 speed?

basically you have 2 engine shapes in the mk2, the 1.0-1.3 and the 1.6-1.8. 084 and 085 fit the small engine, 020 fit the big engine. these codes simply refer to the shape of the box, wheras the 'box code;' people typically talk about refers to what gears are inside the box, for example the 020 box has loads of codes, ACD beign 8v gti, 2Y being 16vb. both are still 020 boxes :)

084 is 4 speed small block, 085 is 5 speed small block, and again there are lots of box codes which refer to what gear ratios are inside them. as i say 085 for a MK2 would be 8N, which is also fitted to MK3 Polos. you can also find 8P code 085 box in other MK3 Polos, which are also good ones to fit. but there are loads more codes than the ones i mention above across the VAG range which could be suitable, MK3 1.4 box would work just dandy.

just as i say, if you want to convert your car to 5 speed you need the box bracket plus those 2 bits of linkage i mention
