Thanks Wayne.

The noise is definitely related to road speed, not engine speed. Hopefully this would rule out a manifold crack, though I'm not sure.

It was a long shot, might also be the speedo head.

I was also thinking that this might be where this is headed. If this were to be the case, the two questions that come to mind for me is how much would a replacment be and would this mean the full unit, dial and all. If so, could the mileage reading be easily aligned with what the car actually shows rather than having to start again at zero?

Yep.

It turns out it was the speedo head. I spoke with the mechanic who worked on the car, who noticed that the clock unit needed replacing and picked up the high level of clicking/ticking noise on his test drive. Somehow his thoughts did not work their way back to me

It seems that the part is not available on the dealership network so I'll need to source one myself. I guess you guys are all used to this sort of thing - I suppose you can call it the joys of mk 2 ownership LOL.

Stiill, I can't complain....even in the short time that I've owned the car I think I'm beginning to see why they're loved so much.

Any advice on where to buy a replacement would be welcome. Perhaps the breakers route would be the best bet? :undecided:

Thanks Wayne,

I have been told that there are many different combinations and I will need to get the right one. Mine shows the 140mph on the clock (not the 120mph) and has the double plug fitting.

Does this mean that any double plug unit from 1984 - 1988 cars will be ok? Do I need to stick to the 140mph unit or can I use a 120mph unit without a problem?

Stick with the same as fitted.

No need to replace the whole unit, just the speedo.

Ok,

so it seems that I need to go like for like. I guess that my car's road speed is calibrated to the 140mph speedo head - so going with a 120mph unit is not an option.

There seem to be a number of different versions of each unit, For example, I have found double plug versions of the 120mph unit with part references 191 919 035 BM, 191 919 035 G and 191 919 035 CT...and presumably there are other variations as well. In speaking to a breaker this morning, I gather that these represent differences in the frontal appearance as well as the orientation of the plugs etc.

Does any one know whether I can fit any double plugged 140mph unit to my car or do I need the exact specific part number? I'm a little concerned that, with these parts becoming harder to come by, the chances of finding the exact match is reduced.  By the sounds of things, this appears to be a pretty common issue - so I guess people are finding a way around it.
