Digifant II Ignition timing. Knock Sensor??
« on: 21 February 2005, 12:31 »
When setting the ignition timing on my 1989 mk2 8v (with Digifant II), there is no change in timing when I connect or disconnect the temperature sensor.? I've checked the temperature sensor and it seems to be working ok.? The wiring from the Digifant control module to the temperature sensor is ok also.? Does this mean I need a new Digifant computer?? Or could it be the knock sensor?? The wiring from the digifant to the knock sensor is ok but I don't know how to test the knock sensor itself.? I've checked the torque setting is 20Nm.
Any ideas?? Or any ideas where I can get a new computer and knock sensor and how much they'd cost?
Cheers

i'm not quite sure what your wanting to do? you have to remove the blue temp connector and rev the engine (hard) three times to put it into adjustment mode then go from there to set up the timing right. is this what your after? just disconnecting stuff wont make much difference.

thanks gtijoe..
..sorry if its not clear! I disconnect the temp sensor, rev the engine over 3000rpm 3 times (to clear the memory), then hold it at 2300rpm and rotate the distributor to get the timing mark lined up.  Then (according to Bentley and Haynes) when I reconnect the temp sensor I should see it advancing by 30degress (all while holding the engine at 2300rpm).  However, when I reconnect the temp sensor, I don't see any difference.
That's what my problem is.  Have you ever seen this before?

hmmm not sure. see i thought to set the timing up properly, you get all the markings lined up, remove blue, rev 3 times, then hold at 2k rpm then check it with a timing light and adjust the distributer as needed. then put the blue back on and drive around happy!

let me have a word with a mate who was a vw technician for about 15 yrs and see what he says?!

Thanks gti joe,
According to the Bentley book, you disconnect the temp sennsor, rev the engine 3 times, then hold it at 2300rpm and using a timing light you line up the mark on the flywheel with the indicator in the hole on the bell housing.  Then, having clamped the distributor in place, when you hold teh engine at 2300rpm and reconnect the temp sensor you should see the ignition advance by  30degrees.  If it only advances 20degrees, the temp sensor is fine but there's a problem with the knock sensor.  If it doesn't advance at all, then there's a problem with either the temp sensor or the ECU.  As my temp sensor seems to be fine, it kinda looks like i might need a new ecu.  I was just wondering if anyone else had any ideas.  Your mate who worked as a VW tehnician might have an idea.  I'd appreciate it if you asked him!!!
Thanks for your help.
