I have a 88 mk2 golf 8v digi.

Here is my problem from the drivers seat. Both of my sidelights work (first position of the switch). On dipped lights (second position) only the left hand side light comes on dipped and the right stays at sidelight. On main beam the inner left hand side light lights up and the outside left is on dipped, on the right hand side on main beam the inner right hand side light does not light up and the outer light stays on dipped.

What should happen at each setting? Does anyone have a wiring diagram for the headlights? I bought an uprated headlight loom of ebay (easy out as I dont have much time to work on my car!) and the first step is to disconnect a plug with two wires coming from it (yellow and black) which is in front of the battery and attached to the chassis, I couldn't find it on my car! Any suggestions?

Have you disconnected the dim-dip resistor?

Yes, packet of polo shaped with a yellow wire going into each end of it?

check ur middle spots m8 and also the fuse for main lights i had this on my old golf the fuse was blown but due to one of the spots lights shorting out

Check your bulbs by taking them out, holding them up to a light, and gently flicking the glass, a wobbly element means the bulb has blown, I've seen this problem many times, and is nearly always, one or more blown bulbs!

First thing I did was to replace all the bulbs with known working ones

I've heard there are  different headlight switches, is this true?

there is a separate fuse for dipped and main for each side, so 4 in total. check em all

with the relayed lighting loom does it do the main lamps, plus also the spot lamps, or just the main lamps?

there are at least 3 headlight switches available, but in this case the switch is irrelevant as all the power for dipped/main comes via the flasher switch in the indicator stalk. there are no relays for the factory wiring, though there might be a faulty relay in your aftermarket loom?

I havent fitted the uprated loom yet because I couldnt find the plug described, I shall have a check of the fuses tonight
