My GTI had been sat without use for the last couple of months too until a week ago. One night the temperature got down to -15 and the alarm went off at about 5 in the morning and then it did it again a few days later when it went down to -8 degrees, I thought it was somebody else's car at first as I've never heard the alarm in the 16 months I've had it. I can only guess that the voltage got too low and the the battery power management thing (mentions it on VW website) cut the power to the non-operational items, like the alarm which in-turn noticed the voltage drop (i had disabled the movement / tilt sensors already on parking it up)

Have since done about 500 miles in it in the relatively mild weather we're having, it started within a few seconds of turning the key so I guess the voltage couldn't have been that low.... have had no issues since.

Have ordered the ctek conditioner you mentioned above in the hope that it'll keep the battery topped up and wont spook the alarm when it clicks in and out - thanks - I didn't know these things existed!

Mine started fine, even the interior lights etc all worked fine as they should but the car logged a fault on its computer system.

Looks like my battery got a bit upset (looks like 14sep2010 if im reading it right?) with the cold and asked the cent elc unit to turn stuff off!!

Possible Symptoms
Some electrical functions in the vehicle shut themselves off.

Possible Causes
At some point, the Battery Monitor requested the Cent. Elect. controller shed some load to ensure that the vehicle would still start. This is not a "fault" but more an "advisory" code. If you leave lights on or doors open or the ignition on for any length of time, the Battery Monitor will request various systems to power things down rather than letting the batter get discharged too much.
Possible Solutions
Clear fault and check later to see if it reappears. Attach a battery charger if you plan to operate electrical systems in the car for extended periods without the engine running.
Note that was months ago too and its only been run for half an hour at tickover in that time since but everything seemed ok until in checked the battery voltage!

Have we gone back in time here....?

I have left my GiT for over 2 weeks without starting her, during the 3 feet etc of snow we had (and -12 temps at night), and she started first time.
I thought these newer batteries had more give, and didn't give a charger a second thought, well not since the mid-1990's.

I don't mean to sound sarcastic, but maybe I have been lucky....?

The new calcium and lead calcium batteries are not lasting that well. A mate works for a main dealer and they are replacing batteries under warrenty quite regular now. All the electronic control units zap power. As i said just because your car starts does not meen your batttery voltage has not dropped as my cars scan shows. My car started no problem with no signs of a low battery, until i tested its voltage, but on one day months ago the voltage was low enough that the cars ecu turned alot of things off and logged a fault.
