Bulb change recommendations
« on: 20 December 2010, 21:21 »
Hi, I'm new to the world of Volkswagen, having recently own a 2006 1.8 SE Honda Civic which I had to sell recently due to being diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.

I have recently (Friday) received a new 60 plate 2 litre TDi (I know it's not a GTi but I though posting in the GTi section would get more answers as the TDi section looks dead!)

I'm loving it so far but the one thing I don't like is the yellow bulbs at the front as I'm used to a clean white/blueish light from HIDs or xenons.

I was wondering if someone could post some recommendations of bulbs for each light e.g DRL, dipped etc that I could change over myself?

Because it's a Motability car, there's not much I can mod with it, so I'm changing as much as I'm allowed :)

Getting my windows tinted & new alloys put on once all the snow clears.

Recommendations for number plate LEDs & interior LEDs for the courtesy/map light would be appreciated too.

Thanks,

Mark

Welcome mate, as yet as far as i know there is no replacement for the DRL bulbs (H15) but the dipped bulbs (H7) there are quite a few available depending on what your after, i've recntly fitted some Osram Nightbreakers which do give a whiter light but nowhere near xenons from here http://www.powerbulbs.com/
Sidelight bulbs are w5w which are also available in many forms. hope this helps

PS you can just turn the DRL's off if you prefer.

I got a set of number plate bulbs from a company called R-Dash...
I *think* these are the ones I got :
http://www.alltronix.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=150&zenid=aerpcvfgola26tunao503husb7

As the Golf runs the VW Canbus system, it knows when you've put in non-standard bulbs and gives you error messages on the dashboard.  (it doesn't worry about the internal lights!).
The MK6 R-Dash bubs require an extra adapter - which is probably why the site above charge an extra £2 for the MK6 version.  The MK5 version will give you dashboard errors.

I replaced all my internal bulbs with these:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2X-4-LED-VOLKSWAGEN-WHITE-194-T11-501-W5W-NO-PLATE-bulb-/320461578196?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4a9cff9fd4

I did order 6 bulb versions, but they don't fit as they're too wide.  I had a couple of these ones - but at the time I was ordering they were £12 each!  Hence why I decided to opt for the cheapy ebay ones.
http://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/501-6-LED-Bulbs.html

I did all the roof lights, 2 x sun visor, 2 x footwell, 1 x glove box... but I still want to do the ones inside my wing mirrors!

Thanks for your suggestions :)

I saw these ones on eBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HID-Xenon-H15-Replacement-Bulbs-8000K-VW-Golf-MK6-/220669808186?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3360f20e3a#ht_2884wt_812 but I'm guessing they won't fit mine as I dont have HIDs already?

Also saw these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/H15-Osram-Headlamp-Bulb-MK6-Golf-High-Beam-/170439121268?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item27aef69974#ht_504wt_689 does anyone have experience of them?

How hard is it to change the bulbs? And how do you cancel the error messages if they appear?

Thanks

The H15 halogens on ebay are just original replacements mate so no point, as you say without a hid conversion then your buggered for the other ones!

The error message disappears once you fit the correct bulb!

As yet I can not find a replacement bulb for the halogen H15 bulb. I have changed my sidelights to 501 type LED bulbs from HIDs4u.com and they have been fantastic, although I do get a bulb out warning light on average once or twice a month, clears as soon as I stop the engine and start again. Also recently fitted a set of HIDs to my low beam which I absoultly love! Bit of a pain to fit but well worth it
