1.6 driver clock swap to gti
« on: 15 February 2005, 19:38 »
I have a 90 driver with hazard on the steering column which makes it a one plug type connector from what I have read, correct?

My dials currently have just the speedo and the clock. I know it is possible to upgrade my dials to ones from a gti with a speedo but have read that there are 120, 140 and 160mph versions in either one or two plug connection. My questions are as follows:

1. Do I need the 120mph clocks from a gti so the speedo reading stays accurate or can I use any speed clocks i can find as long as they are one plug type (90-).

2. Is it possible to get the digital readout (MFA?) thing working with the clocks aswell? If so does this mean I need to get the GTI stalks too?

3. Will i need the speed sender from the gearbox from the gti to give me the rev reading?

4. Is it easy to wind back the millage of the donor clocks to the mileage of my car?

5. Does anyone have any clocks for sale?

I know there must have been loads of people who have done this so any info much appreciated

Cheers

Acko

i think the 8v gti single plug would be a a straight swap and accurate on the speedo. try it and see?

If these speedos were easy to clock back then mine would have low milage at every service

its easier to clock them forward but might take a while :P

the clock should be a straight swap but if you had 120mph clocks before you need to use them again or so im told as youll get a false reading from the speedo cable.

you can hook up the mfa and yes youll need the stalk to run it, i have a guide but its for the older vdo versions with 2 plugs and doesnt show how to hook up the actual tube for the trip and mpg bits but im sure bentlys can help you or someone on here :D0

http://www.thepaty.plus.com/8v/howto/install_MFA.htm

there is also a guide on that site to the rev counter but its an american site so left is right and right is left :P

What you need are MFA clocks from an 8v with a single plug.? Don't worry about the speedo, what you do is swap your old one in so you keep your milage :)

Just for your information, the 120 and 160 mph clocks use the same speedo drive gear so are interchangable, but the 140mph clocks need a different speedo gear.

Unfortunately that MFA link isn't going to help you because the wiring will be different, I'm not sure if the 90 spec MK2s have the MFA plug already hanging off the dash loom, if not you'll need to find a wiring diagram!

As well as the clocks you'll need an outside temp sensor (plugged into the wing behind the bumper) and oil temp sensor (plugged into the oil filter housing, there isn't a hole for one on a Driver so you'll need to get the filter housing to an 8v).

The MPG is easy, all you need to do is fit a Y splitter to a vacuum hose and plug it into the back of the clocks, I ran mine from one of the pipes plugged into the thick tube between the inlet and brake servo.

Alternatively you can get some clocks from a late 1.8 driver or GL.  Some of these have a rev counter instead of a clock and a digital clock where the fuel gauge used to be.  When I had a 1.6 driver (H plate) I bought my clocks from Awesome GTI - they just plug straight in and are 120mph clocks so use the same drive in the gearbox.

True, but not as easy to find as GTI clocks.  If you don't wire up the MFA the digital display will still work as a clock btw ;)
