if it really is cam bearings you have to replace the whole head, are you sure its not a tappet issue?

check if you have the splash cover fitted, if not get down scrappy and pinch one

gsf sell tappets, you'll need 16 of em. id assume its tappets rattling and not the cam caps.  has it had an oil change recent, if so what spec did you use and what oil filter

splash cover ??   the 16v's don't have a splash cover over the cams like an 8 valve dose.

if its ratteling it'll be cam chain or tappets.   cam bearings don't fail unless they have been oil starved to wear them out you'll 1/2 way through your 3rd set of main bearings. as compared to the other bearings there not under much load
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

yarg that was for the 2nd part of zee question ;)
whats the tension like on the PAS belt, I set em to about 5mm of deflection.

if it is the tappets some have tried putting in a litre of ATF into the engine oil, it helps clean out the oilways and can sometimes restore noisy tappets. does the rattle get any quieter after the engine has warmed up a bit?  Also get a screwdriver and put the blunt end to your ear, press t'other end to various parts of the cam cover till you narrow down where its coming from. if right at the passenger end of the head its probably the cam chain
