power steering rack
« on: 15 December 2010, 15:28 »
My power assisted steering rack is leaking alot of fluid out of both ends. Drivers side more so than the passenger side. And I was just wondering if the rack from a later model will fit because I have a mk3 1.8 8v SE sat waitin for scrap and as far as I know the PAS worked fine on that last time I drove it. My mk2 is a 1990 reg gti 8v Big bumper. If not does anyone know where I can get a brand new one. The only one i can find at the mo is £180 + vat. I dont mind spending money on my car but that seems nuts to me. And i can only find one second hand one on ebay and he cant post it an I cant go a pick it up. But the price is right!

Any help would be awesome!

MK3 rack will fit, but tyou'll need to change the track rods for MK2 PAS ones, and fit the MK3 UJ :)

I would take off all the pas pipes, pump and alternator setup off it as well and fit em all to the MK2.  the pipe from the pump to the reservoir wont fit the MK2, but that one is just plain rubber hose anyway so old one should be fine. pump -> rack hose is direct fit, the rack->reservoir hose will fit after you cut the rubber end down a bit.

all the pas pump and alt setup will swap over from the MK3 as well, but have to swap it all as a complete set inc all brackets and pullies
