In my experience of mk3's (Ive owned 3 and have 3 mates that have owned them) Ive never known a dodgy ECU (touch wood) but the symptoms described do sound like its a possibility, but it could be any number of things and we are never gonna diagnose it over the internet. :grin:

Yup with my old 16v, sorted when i replaced my ecu and fuel pump relay, can't say which one was faulty though!

Sorry, mis-read - I had to give my mate a ECU relay just last Friday - its a common issue  :embarassed: :grin: :grin:

even if its not the ecu relay, chuck old one in the glovebox as a spare for when your current one packs in. i have a spare ecu and fuel relay in mine for this reason ;)

67, 80 or 167 - fuel

ecu relay is cheap from vw, 10ish iirc
