My Mrs had a 120d Msport and the suspension was shocking - you wont need new teeth when you go over bumps in a golf.

My Mrs has a 120i M Sport Cabrio - and I have the same problem with feeling every bump on the road.  I've started to think part of it has to do with the run-flat tyres - which make you feel pot holes so much?

Interesting thread this one.

I've had a 3dr 130i 18months or so ago. I'm my opinion the BMW is a better car but it depends on what you are after.

The Golf has a more immediate set of skills but the BMW has a greater depth to it. It has more character and a truly great motor, in fact the engine defines the car. The golf has more space and feels lighter and more on its toes feeling to driving it.

I guess the question is why are you selling the BMW?

It is not....I find the difference huge...drove that BMW for a week...what an overpriced car...too much plastic all around you...great chairs (so has the GTI) but the rest build for midgets...bad rear/side vision
and hardly any decent extra's for all that money (got the feeling that the majority of my euro's went to image what most call character )

VW delivers much more bang for the buck.......it simply ticks all the boxes...and if you state that the engine defines the car get the GTI's cheap remap and be amazed about its engine power......would not be surpised if it ends up being faster than the BMW as well...did not engaged one yet...

Anyway I rate my MK VI car very high and a lot higher than my GTI MK V which I loved to bits....

I just love my car.  My only problem last year (and it was serious) was that the bloody thing was like Bambi on ice.  Fixed that with a couple of winter tyres and now I'm unreservedly smitten.

The more I own this car the more I grow to appreciate it. It really is a sleeper... not in terms of performance, but in terms of charm. I agree with the views on here that the GTI has a premium feel. I regularly swap between my GTI and my dad's slk and (granted the slk is ageing) I find the GTI actually feels higher quality. Perhaps it's just because the GTI is newer. Hmmm.

I also agree with the versatility. Mine is remapped although I am now used to the performance so it doesn't really feel that quick any more. I had to get it rolling roaded to check it was putting out the same power. But it is very economical (tax, insurance, fuel) for the performance and it is very practical.

Heading over to Europe again this summer with some mates and I can't wait to do another long trip in the GTI.

Car - 8/10

Dealers 4/10 (service department)

I know I might be very lucky on here but my service department is very good.

I'll rate the GTI at 8/10. There are some very small improvements which could be made  -some of these are just peculiar to my specific GTI and won't apply to other GTIs - but on the whole the car is very very good.

I want to add however that spec for spec my car seems to have increased by about 3k. That would now put it up against a lower spec R or a similar spec S3. I'm not too bothered in terms of the car being expensive but considering the other cars offer a similar engine, gearbox and refinement balance but with Haldex 4wd, well I'm just not sure the GTI would be such good value.

Enjoyed mine loads, had it nearly 18 months remap made it so much better when the revo software worked, nearly swapped for a golf r a few months back, However the bad weather and my need for something faster, I'm swapping back to an Evo, new price drop has helped my decision £5000 off all evos now, you can have an fq360 for the same price as an R, and a fq330 for about the same price as a gti with a few extra's, fq300 cheaper then a gti outright
Add that with a 3year unlimited miles warranty it blows vw away! Salesmen v good got a further discount off the new discount,

Froggy: What will you replace it with?

Nothing for the moment, although the Land Rover Evoque might tickle my fancy when it's launched next summer.

Thanks for the replies, the underlying theme for me from these replies is that the majority of you love your GTI's.!
Although a 20 minute test drive isn't long I was more impressed than I expected By the GTI. Comparing it to the 130 after such a short drive is maybe a bit presumptious but here goes.

Engine --- as Beardo has stated the straight six defines the 130 and is a peach 9/10.After saying that the Golf engine is also very good indeed being responsive, linear and very flexible 8/10.

Handling --- On smooth tarmac the 130 handles really well and gets better the faster you go.On anything other than smooth tarmac it's not as confidence inspiring and the picture changes 7/10.The Golf at no time felt anything less than very composed and solid 8/10.

Ride Quality--- 130 let down by shocks through the car from road defects, manholes etc no doubt due to the run flats 6/10. Golf seemed to be better resolved over a range of surfaces 8/10.

Driveability --- 130 not an easy car to drive quickly smoothly, notchy gear change 1st and 2nd
especially when cold, clutch control hard to master so never as satisfying as it should be 7/10.Golf so
driveable it was an absolute pleasure.Gear change superior. 9/10.

Exterior Quality ---  in the fairly recent past I have often been able to detect manufacturing issues on Golfs ,not on this car though. 130 7/10. Golf 8/10.

Interior Quality ---  Don't agree that the quality of the materials on my car which is a facelift 2007 LE 3 door is of a lesser quality than those used in the GTI, however the Golf feels more robust and better screwed together, couldn't detect a creak, rattle or vibration during the test drive. 130 7/10 Golf 8/10.

Comfort   --- really impressed by the seat comfort in the GTI, driving position good in both cars. 130 8/10. Golf 9/10

am1w described the 130 as cramped, ugly and overpriced. Although not quite as spacious as the Golf, I have never found the cars interior and boot dimensions to be a hardship. The car in 3 door guise is actually quite handsome in my opinion and a bit different. I would agree it is overpriced , I would not have paid the 30K which was the new cost of the Limited Edition. After saying that though spec a GTI to a similiar standard ie leather, nav, xenons, parking sensors,Bluetooth, updated sound system and no doubt you won't be far away !

Snoopy , I was interested to read that you are so disappointed in the silly design errors encountered in the car, can you elaborate a little?.

Thanks again.

Interior Quality ---

although i havent driven the 3.0 straight six in the 1 series I have in both the 3 and 7. Absolutely lovelly jubbly it was!!!

love the interior of the 1, esp the seats which are much better than GTI imo. (msport ones)

the ride is harsh, but the biggest problem i found with the 1 series is 1st and 2nd gears... horrible horrible horrible!!!

remap the GTI and I think know the 130i will struggle to keep up... only problem then is the FWD but this means the car can still have some use in bad weather. BMW's are useless in the snow/ice, trust me I had to drive around a 7 series yesterday with 20" wheels!!!!

Sponges for sound damping in the wheel arches below the drain for the scuttle panel are open cell type so soak up water and will cause rust (the smaller one of the two at the top of the wing is fitted to mk5s and its causing them to rust)
My original thread about it including video that imo is worth watching
