How highly do you rate your GTI

Hello everyone! . I have joined the forum in the hope of getting some owners views of how highly you rate your Gti, how it compares against previous cars you have owned. Currently  I run a BMW 130 and considering a Gti as a possible replacement. I have had a fairly short test drive in the Mk VI and was impressed by all aspects of the car. The car had leather seats and 18" Monzas.

Welcome, even though you are not an owner yet.

I tried a BMW 130i and hated it. It was cramped, ugly, and overpriced. Rated it 11/20.
Then tried a GTi and loved everything about it. Its looks, size, performance and comfort.
I rate my GTi 18/20.
It is a near perfect car IMO.

Got the car justs over twelve months and done 10000+ miles with no problem or rattle. Really happy with my car. Would like a bit more rear leg room and boot space. Straight line speed more than adequate rather than spectacular!

You might spend £30000+ on a premium hot hatch. Don't expect the after sales match that premium image! So far I had only dealt with Liverpool VW and VW racing. Maybe there are better dealers out there!

I am selling my GTI after 16 months, not because I don't like it, but because I usually change cars every 18 months or so irrespective of how good they are (pity you can't do that with wives...  )

Anyway, I would say the Mk6 GTI is in the top 2 or 3 cars I have owned. I have had about 20, including a remapped BMW 330d (300hp) and an e39 M5 (400hp). My remapped (275hp) Golf is easier to live with than either of these and acceleration is on a parr with my 330d. It has one MASSIVE handicap, however: it's FWD, so no matter how good the engine is, you can never really get all the power down on to the road like you can with a RWD.

It's a brilliant car and I shall be sad to see it go, but this is the last time I buy a powerful FWD car.

You can but it costs more 

As a white good its a good car. It drives well, handles well, goes well, has a nice touchy feely interior so has everything jounos want.
But as a design engineer i see too many cost cutting (Mk5's suffer too) and silly design errors that most don't see and the average Joe would not be bothered about as they probably change cars before they ever become an issue.
Mine also seems to have been a rush build as i have suffered quite a few rattles.
So to sum up, nice drive, nice interior but bitterly disapointed in the package from a design point of view.

Interesting thread this one.

I've had a 3dr 130i 18months or so ago. I'm my opinion the BMW is a better car but it depends on what you are after.

The Golf has a more immediate set of skills but the BMW has a greater depth to it. It has more character and a truly great motor, in fact the engine defines the car. The golf has more space and feels lighter and more on its toes feeling to driving it.

I guess the question is why are you selling the BMW?

I rate mine 9 out of 10.

Quick, comfortable, practical, car park kudos, looks good, economical when it want to be and great fun to drive. Always look forward to a long journey in it.

But need more power ( I cannot remap as it is a company car ) and better traction ( much improved now that Contis have been replaced with Goodyears ). The XDS trick diff does not really work that well. I came from a 4 Motion and that was brilliant in all weathers.

So to sum up perfect car for me would be a Golf R. Needed to own a GTi to work that out !

130i looks to be brilliant car though, real sleeper. I couldn't live with the ' bread van' look though.

My Mrs had a 120d Msport and the suspension was shocking - you wont need new teeth when you go over bumps in a golf.

We also agreed that the dash on the 1 series was very "low rent" with low quality plastics versus the golfs premium feel.

In summary Golfs are a great day to day car.
