hi there people i really need help! I have done an engine conversion which consisted of taking the engine out of my 1.4 golf and replacing it with a 2.0 16v gti engine, along with changing the engine we have done the axels, brakes, wiring the lot, basically re-shelled the car! the problem we have now is starting the car. if i turn the key the engine runs for about literally 1 second (fires once) then cuts out straight away, we have taken it to Volkswagen who tried re-coding the key, to the 2.0 ecu, which hasnt helped in the slightest. the guy said that he thinks i need a chip which would basically stop the Immobiliser and that after that my car should run fine. I basically want to know if anyone has encountered the same problem and if hes correct or not ? could it possibly be something else? and if hes right where could i get such a thing. cheers. James another thing to add is that when we plugged it into the computer at volkswagen it came up with engine code 00546, if anyone knows what this is.

You need the matching chip in the key or have the immob bypassed on the ecu.

Ignition is immobilised with a chip in the key. With all mk3 engine swaps you either need to swap your ignition and keys locks to the ones that the car with the ECU you are using came out of. OR get the ecu you are going to be using de-immobilised.

Their effectively the same thing, basically as Wayne said you need to get the immobiliser defeated in order to use your original ignition barrel etc. There are companies around that can do this for you, after a quick search on here I found that AMD and Jabba Sport can do it. I'm sure others can as well though, it'd be worth sending Topher a PM  :wink:

Agree with what everyone else has said. What is the code on your ecu?

I believe the earlier ones don't have the immobiliser and it may be easier to swap the ecu to one of these. I think they end with AB or similar. The ones ending with BE are definitely with immobiliser.

00546 Fault code is as follows:

00546

          o 1.1 00546 - Data Wiring faulty: Implausible Signal

                + 1.1.3 Possible Solutions
                + 1.1.4 Special Notes

00546 - Data Wiring faulty
00546 - Data Wiring faulty: Implausible Signal
Possible Symptoms

    * Engine not starting / immediate Shutdown
    * Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) ON

Possible Causes

    * Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Immobilizer Control Module (J362) faulty
          o No Signal or Implausible Signal on W-Line between Immobilizer Control Module (J362) and Engine Control Unit or Fuel Cut-Off Valve Control Unit
    * Immobilizer Control Module (J362) incorrectly coded
    * Immobilizer Control Module (J362) faulty

Possible Solutions

    * Check Wiring and/or Connector(s) from/to Immobilizer Control Module (J362)
    * Check Immobilizer Control Module (J362) Coding, Baud Rate Setting
    * Check/Replace Immobilizer Control Module (J362)

Special Notes

    * Under certain circumstances this code may be stored after improperly operating the Vehicle/Ignition. For example after the Engine has stopped the Ignition is switched on again immediately (Engine Control Module is still in the Start-Up Phase).
          o In such a case switch off the Ignition and wait at least 10 seconds before switching it back on. Then check and clear Fault Codes.

  • Hello, my name is John and I'm a dub addict.
if your 1.4 was a pre-96 it wont have the immob control box and loom in it, its pretty easy to add one though the loom only needs an ignition live and an earth,plus 1 wire to ecu and another to diagnostics plug. if you get a box with a matched key from any other post-96 mk3 you can then use vag-com to code your abf ecu with it. if you dont get a matched chip then you have to get vw to code it to the immob box and then to the ecu.

if your 1.4 is a post-96, what exactly did vw try? if they only matched a new chip to the car this wont have helped as you need to match the ecu to the immob box.
