GTi 16V mod
« on: 24 November 2010, 01:22 »
So I just have to swallow my pride and ask for help. My car is pretty stock at the moment and I wanna make some mods to it, but I also don't want my fuel intake to increase by alot. I want my car to feel a bit faster and lighter. I was thinking induction, exhaust and branch? cam? throttles? Advantages and disadvantages of throttles and cams? Also I want my car to sound deep and solid at low revs and like an animal at high, but not too loud when cruising.

Help would be appreciated.

With any mod it'll drink more fuel. Power and economy doesn't go together, unless its to do with politics.

Also, you're looking at a couple of grand to get somewhere in the 200 region. Ess knows his was around a 16v well, he'll be able to point you in the right direction.

Induction kit - no, waste of money will possibley make less power due to taking in hot air
Cams - expensive, only really benefit if you've got a ported head, 4 branch manifold and it will drink ALOT more fuel, not a huge power increase

Get decent coilies, brakes and tyres so you can drive it harder, drill the airbox on the driver inner wing side if you want the noise.

If all else fails, clean the throttle body
1983 mk1, 2.0, TSR pack C head, Eaton M45 - work in progress
1990 mk2 GTD, boost, fuel, soot
16v GTi mk3; chilli red, 16" Audi Speedlines, coilies
1934 Ford Dragster, 200mph in 6 seconds.

I would do the following things.

1. Drilled airbox
2. Cat back system
3. Decat
4. Port & polised head and Throttle body
5 Cams
6. Decent suspension setup.

That's what i want to do to my VR6.

But remember, as Khare the wise man said "Power and economy doesn't go together"

Thanks guys. I know like performance will affect my economy, but I get like 500kms out of a tank of fuel and I don't wanna see it go down to like 350. I also saw some guy on here did some test with different types of air intakes and did test on which of it worked better but I have no idea where that thread has gone too.

Makes me kinda nervous. I drive like city roads most of the time. I depends how much time I spend in traffic but I get about between 32mpg and 28mpg. I have no idea how big like "reserve" is but I usually push for 300-315 miles out of like 10 gallons (45liters). I drove home about 15km on the Freeway one day cruising at about 43mph and my consumption came to 40mpg.

with throttle bodies yo are going to look at a higher fuel consumption. maybe low 20s and for throttles to be fitted too your looking at alot of money and only getting maybe about 230? (i think and with other mods)

the other mods listed along with a lightend flywheel will be enough to suit you i think :)

Get a rawr pipe as its called goes from airbox to throttle body. Improves induction noice. And if you have another car send the engine to be rece prepped. There's a company in pvw that do it. Bout 900 for a 1.8 and 1500 for a 1.9 bore aswell as the cams pistons and such.
