Mk2 2.0l 8v Cambelt Jumped!!

My bloody cambelt has jumped a tooth and bent a valve. The car just cut out the other day after driving a few metres down the road, then wouldnt start, it seemed like the camshaft was stuck, i manually turned it and now the car starts all be it sounding like a tractor! Any ideas what could have caused this?

yea tension was fine. was running sweet as, the belt has only been on about 500 miles if that. the timing was knocked out very slightly and 3 of the teeth had sheared off the belt.

might be the other way round, valve issue caused engine to stop suddenly and strip the timing belt. any noticeable issues under the rocker cover like damaged tappets or anything? also take the timing belt sprocket off the cam, check the woodruff key and sprocket slot all ok

what sort of engine rpm was it at when this happened?

1 tooth on cam pully won't bend a valve normaly   but 1 on the cranck counts for 2 on the cam.

however if it's riped teeth off the belt thats not good  1st thing to do would be to check the make of the belt ect and try ensure it's not some chinise crap if it is a good reputable brand  pulling teeth off belts means can mean the cam or intermediate shaft is trying to sieze up
all the VW's have gone bar 1.

i had a woodruff key shear on my 2.0 before, i managed to bend 4 valves....but i had no compression and wouldn't start (i obviously didn't know the valves had bent, or the key had snapped till i took it apart) infact i put the fixed head back on as i assumed it had jumped a tooth, and only realised the woodruff key was fubar'd when it would time up!
2 Mk2's, both in bits, 2 Rocco's soon to become 1, and a Polo 1.3.....
The polo is the only car with MOT and in working order...Doh!!
