It's normal. It's just unburnt fuel lighting up inside the exhaust. All exhausts do it, just that OEM ones quieten the pops.

I had a peco backbox, sounded standard, although centre silencer was on still.

 Typical boy racer/fast and furious wannabe superstar

A FULL stainless steel exhaust system will help a LOT. Especially if it's straight through although that would be ridiculously loud.

A camshaft will also help massively, my old cammed 8v with a 1 box system used to backfire and rumble like a machinegun.

The more tuned your engine is, the more it will pop

To be honest, as you'll hear a lot in the mk3 section, anything below the 2l 8v isn't worth tuning as you will gain very little and spend a lot, only to make it to the same base as an 8v, even then its not quick. You're better off saving up the pennies and eventually buying a more powerful model, either 16v or vr6 really, any other mk3 model will struggle to make power.

pecos just are not the best, and there is better out there, however a back box alone wont give you any power increase, its just the tone of the exhaust, better back boxes will give better tones without making it sound like a wasp in a baked bean tin
