GTi mk4 has got no grip! HELP!!
« on: 02 November 2010, 18:00 »
The other day I took a gentle bend in a road (going left) at around 20 mph and my car lost all grip and skidded, I tried to correct it and it skidded in the other direction on to the other side of the road. With my sister and my son in the car this was, as you can imagine, not the most relaxing drive I'd ever been on! Luckily there was no one on the other side of the road and we went on our way.  I have just replaced the 2 rear tyres as they were a little low and I thought that maybe is was as simple as that but having just taken it out for a bit of a spin I don't feel like that much has improved. The car feels like (and I know this sounds a bit odd) it's like one of those pond skater bugs that is just hovering on the surface of the road... Wondering if maybe this could have anything to do with the suspension?? Any ideas.....

hi there could be a number of things that cause the car to loose control or skid first thing to do is the very basic's like tyre pressures this can have a big impact on how the car drives and handles ,is the car like it all the time or could it have been road surface or conditions ie wet and aqua plaining ,what make of tyres are on the car again this can make a big difference with grip levels cheap tyres can be really nasty ,and have you bumped a kerb or anything having the tyre's, suspension ,and tracking checked may find something not right

Check pressures (any garage).

Check alignment (find a branch of Pro-tyre).

Check you haven't fitted cheap, rubbish tyres (check the sides of the tyres they should say Continental, Goodyear, Michelin or Vredstein, Firestone, Pirelli.  If they say Woosung, Nankang, Sunny or something unpronouncable then you've screwed up).
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
