A litle video by autocar
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drOtBWhGxks&feature=fvw

A little video showing the differences in different types of tyres
http://www.tirerack.com/videos/index.jsp?video=26&tab=winter

I don't think comparing a 6 series to a 1 series in the autocar test was very scientific, the tirerack test was better and seems fairly conclusive; if you are driving on sheet ice winter tyres are definitely better.
