Hiya,
I have recently removed an RCD310 from my Golf R and replaced it with an RCD510.I intend to sell the RCD310 but have read conflicting things about getting the security code from VW.There's no card etc. in the vehicle wallet, although there is a small barcoded sticker on the side of the removed unit with a 4 digit code that has been highlighted with a marker pen.
Every time i ring the dealer a different member of staff on the service desk tells me something different.I have now had to make an appointment while the radio goes into the workshop to retreive the code from Germany?
Anyone experienced this or similar? Will i have to pay for this service? My local dealer isn't the supplying dealer so they aren't exactly falling over themselves to help!(although i have bought a few cars there previously).

Sounds like the sticker could be the code to me.. But I guess you could only test it by putting the unit in another car

I had to get the dealer to retrieve the code for me (RCD510). Once dealer wanted £10, the other did it for free (neither were the supplying dealer and both were asked to do it while I was paying them for a service).

My dealer told me that VW no longer supply code cards as people generally just leave them in the handbook in the glove box - which isn't exactly secure!
He said he could get it for me, but when I looked through my manual, someone had scribbled a 4 digit number in there in pen.
I connected the RCD510 to a 12V power supply (as I'd already fitted the RNS510) and tried inputting the number in the manual.
Sure enough it was the correct code number - so I managed to sell the stereo quite recently.

  • ..gotta feel for my automobile..
Just go to the dealer you bought the car from, they'll give you the code.

That's what I did, it'll be on their system.
Mk7 GTI. DBP, DCC, Winter pack. Mine since new, July 2013.
GTI no. 4. Golf no. 5.  VW no. 7.

I didn't even go to the dealer. I rang them up and they told me over the phone.

The way I understand the system to work is it only holds one head unit security number at a time so put your old RCD310 back in your car and it should ask for the code again. Then try the highlighted code.

Or like others have said, just phone your supplying dealer.

This is incorrect.  I swapped between the RCD / RNS a number of times as I couldn't get my reverse camera coded properly straight away.  It only asked me for the RNS code the first time, and the each swap just worked without a code.

My experience was different from yourself
RCD510 > RNS510 (needed code) > original RCD510 put back in (code needed) > new RNS510 (code needed) > original RCD510 put back in (code needed).

Not sure why mine should be any different.

Odd...

I went from RCD > RNS (code needed), then back to RCD (not needed), back to RNS / RCD /RNS / RCD / RNS (still no code needed) and eventually on to a different RNS LED version (code needed).
