engine rattle at 3k
« on: 15 October 2010, 21:56 »
I have an annoying rattle on my engine(2.0 gti 8v),its fine on tickover but at around 3k it develops a top end rattle and if you keep reving it dissapears. If i rev it up slowly its not as bad and is more noticeable under load. Its high mileage 157k but other than a puff of smoke at start up its fine,It is definately top end so can rule out big ends.

Anyone have similar problems before???

Is it a tinny rattle? If so a common rattle is the exhaust downpipe heatshield. Try revving the car with your head under the bonnet and listen out around exhaust area. If it is the downpipe then the solution is 2 large jubilee clips joined together and tightened around the heatshield to stop it rattling.

I have that on mine and that's the heat shield. Not got permanent solution yet, just a couple of spots of  exhaust putty help reduce it

As I said in the first reply, try jubilee clips.

There is an alloy heatshield attached to the head just above the exhaust manifold. Check that!
