lol.

grrr, bloody car, one thing after another. so how hard is it to change the bearing yourself, or how much to get a garage to do it (roughly)

I did a rear wheel bearing over the weekend.

This kit: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400122961275 + Haynes manual = Not too taxing a job at all, the only problem I had was getting the hub off, but I managed to find a mate with a puller so lucky for me it was straight forward. Have a search for 'Mk3 wheel bearing' and you may get enough info to do it yourself.

I didn't use a press, just followed the advice from another poster on this topic: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=155324.0

Also note, that someone had theirs pressed for 20 quid at a garage
